Well friends, I did it. I took the plunge today into the world of cloth diapers.
When pregnant with Teddy I considered the option, but wanted to give myself some slack first to adjust to being a mom first before making an investment into something I may not be able to keep up with, I mean lets be honest, I struggle to do laundry once a week, let alone an extra 2 loads. Now that he is 6 months old, and we finally have our own washer and dryer, as well as the fact that I've started noticing how much extra garbage we have due to the disposables, I've decided to just put on my big girl pants and figure out cloth diapering. Whether we stick to it or not is yet to be determined. It just so happened that this same week of making this decision, there was a cloth diaper sale/swap at a lovely store near us. I arrived, eager to learn, and pick up a few things to try. Hokey Toodle. There are alll sorts of kinds. All sorts of colours, and fabrics, and textures, and shapes and sizes and smells. I'm exaggerating a bit of course, but simply for silly emphasis. I am positive I listened clearly to nice lady explaining everything, but when I got home and tried to explain the different systems to Dan I couldn't help but wish I'd just bought one kind. I kind of wished someone had just said, "Here is this one kind, here's how it works, and you WILL love it!" I'm pretty sure that the power of positive psychology, mixed with potentially less options, would have made me feel quite happy about whatever the heck kind of diapers they were. Alas, I've got 3 different kinds of diapers and 3 different inserts, plus fleece liners and boosters to figure out. Some cotton, some microfiber, some bamboo, some hemp. Now that all my complaining is done, let's talk about the positive things that get me excited about this adventure, in order of importance 1) his bum looks stinking adorable in them 2) they come in lots of fun colours and patterns 3) less poo splatter up the back and out the sides. 4)you can buy them SECONDHAND!!! And we all know how much I LOVE second hand 5) it's been a great way to connect with other moms and hear about their experiences and wisdom. Community. #blessed. 6) reduces SO much waste. I saw a photo once of the mountain of diapers ONE child would go through if they're in disposable diapers until potty trained and it pretty much haunted me. 7) less chemicals! less in my laundry detergent, and less that ultimately end up right next to his skin 8) it's cheaper by thousands of dollars if you can use them for multiple children (and no this isn't a pregnancy announcement) Anyway, wish us luck! With the end of this blog I hear the little booger waking from his nap and I'm sure it will be time to take care of poopy bundle number 2 of the day. I must admit I'm a bit giddy to try out his teal, pocket apple cheeks diapers with the bamboo insert.
